Amazing Made with Experience

For centuries, Sri Lanka—once known as Ceylon—was home to some of the most skilled metal artisans in the world. Our ancestors mastered the art of brass crafting, creating oil lamps, temple artifacts, and door locks with unmatched precision and skill. This craft was not just a profession; it was a sacred tradition, passed down from generation to generation, deeply connected to our island’s history, religion, and way of life.

At Kandyan Art Company, we are the last guardians of this dying art. For over 40 years, our workshop has kept alive the ancient techniques of Ceylonese brass craftsmanship, techniques that have been slowly disappearing due to modernization, mass production, and neglect. Today, we stand as the only place where you can find true, handcrafted brass oil lamps and locks, made using the same age-old methods perfected by our forefathers.

A Legacy Cast in Brass

Our brass oil lamps are not just decorative items—they are living pieces of history. The traditional Athu Pahana (Tree of Light), the Dambadeniya Lamp, and the Kota Wehera Ath Phana are some of the rare and historic designs we continue to manufacture today. These lamps are created not just for beauty, but for function, using authentic oil-burning technology that allows them to stay lit for hours, just as they did centuries ago in Sri Lanka’s temples and royal palaces.

Many people today have never seen a real traditional brass lamp in action—because the market is flooded with cheap imitations that do not function as intended. Our lamps, on the other hand, follow the original designs passed down through generations, ensuring that they work exactly as they were meant to.

We also manufacture brass door locks—a lost craft that once played a crucial role in protecting Sri Lanka’s temples and historic buildings. Unlike mass-produced modern locks, our traditional temple locks are entirely handmade, featuring intricate, historical designs and superior durability.

The Fall of a Great Craft and Our Fight to Revive It

For centuries, Ceylon’s brass artisans were highly respected and sought after, their skills protected and preserved by royal families and temple custodians. But as time passed, this sacred knowledge was threatened by cheap mass production, economic struggles, and loss of traditional apprenticeships.

The situation became worse in recent years due to the 2018 Easter bombings and the economic crisis, which forced many craftsmen to abandon their workshops. The knowledge that had been preserved for generations was on the brink of being completely erased.

At Kandyan Art Company, we could not allow this to happen. We made a decision:

  • We stopped selling our products to middlemen—because they were undervaluing our work and replacing real craftsmanship with factory-made imitations.
  • We started selling directly to customers, ensuring that those who wanted real, traditional brassware could get it from the only remaining true source—our workshop.
  • We began educating people about the difference between real and fake brass oil lamps, sharing knowledge about Sri Lanka’s lost brass technology so that our history would not be forgotten.

The Only Place to Find Real Ceylonese Brasswork

Today, there is only one place where you can buy real, handcrafted, historically accurate brasswareKandyan Art Company.

  • The mass-produced items sold in most stores today are not made using traditional methods.
  • The so-called “antique” lamps and locks being sold by traders are mostly fake—designed for decoration, not function.
  • The majority of modern brass items lack the engineering and craftsmanship of true Sri Lankan heritage pieces.

We are the last workshop keeping these traditions alive. Our brass lamps function just as they did centuries ago. Our locks are built to last for generations. Our designs stay true to the art that defined our ancestors.

When you buy from us, you are not just purchasing a product—you are owning a piece of Ceylon’s history, a legacy forged in fire and metal, crafted with passion, dedication, and centuries of expertise.

This is not just brass. This is Sri Lanka’s soul, cast in metal. And now, it belongs to you.
